Typhoid Test (Widal)

What this test checks

The Widal test looks for antibodies your body produces against the typhoid bacteria. If you have typhoid, the level of these antibodies rises sharply, and the test picks that up.

Why do people get this test?

Typhoid is still common in Nepal because of contaminated food and water. The Widal test, combined with your symptoms, helps your doctor decide whether to start typhoid treatment quickly. (For the most accurate result, a blood culture is added when possible.)

When you should consider this test

• Step-ladder fever lasting more than 4 to 5 days
• Stomach pain, constipation, or diarrhoea with fever
• Headache and feeling very tired with high fever
• Recent travel to areas with poor water hygiene
• Food poisoning that is not improving

How to prepare

No special preparation needed. Mention recent antibiotic use, as it can affect the result.
