Tests for myoglobin, a muscle protein released when muscles are seriously injured. High levels can damage the kidneys.

Important after major muscle injury, prolonged exercise, electrocution, or earthquake-related crush injury.

• After major muscle injury or crush
• Dark cola-coloured urine
• Severe muscle pain after intense exercise
