What this test checks

Lipase is an enzyme made by the pancreas to digest fats. A sharp rise strongly indicates inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

Why do people get this test?

More specific than amylase for diagnosing pancreatitis — the test of choice for severe upper-belly pain.

When you should consider this test

• Severe upper-belly pain radiating to back
• Persistent vomiting with belly pain
• Suspected pancreatitis
