What this test checks

Detects BCL-2 protein, which prevents programmed cell death (apoptosis). BCL-2 overexpression is found in follicular lymphoma and DLBCL, and is relevant to prognosis and emerging targeted treatments (venetoclax).

Why do people get this test?

BCL-2 expression is a key factor in lymphoma classification and prognosis. High BCL-2 in DLBCL combined with high MYC ('double expressors') predicts aggressive behaviour requiring more intensive treatment. BCL-2 inhibitors are now used in some settings.

When you should consider this test

• When classifying B-cell lymphomas — particularly follicular lymphoma and DLBCL
• When assessing double-expressor DLBCL for prognosis
• As part of comprehensive lymphoma immunophenotyping
