What this test checks

Processes a body fluid sample (pleural fluid, ascites, CSF) into a concentrated cell block that can be used for immunohistochemistry and special stains — allowing more detailed analysis than standard cytology smears.

Why do people get this test?

Cell block preparation allows the full range of IHC markers to be applied to fluid samples — the same approach used for tissue biopsies. This greatly increases diagnostic accuracy for cancer cells in body fluids.
