Detects inflammation or infection in the body.
ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) measures how fast your red blood cells settle in a tube. They settle faster when there is inflammation somewhere in the body, so a high ESR is a general signal that something is going on.
ESR does not say what is wrong, but a high reading tells your doctor that the body is fighting something — an infection, an injury, or an inflammatory condition. It is commonly used together with CRP to monitor any active illness.
