What this test checks

Checks your blood for antibodies against Brucella bacteria — organisms that cause brucellosis, a bacterial infection spread through contact with infected animals (cattle, goats, sheep) or consumption of unpasteurised dairy products.

Why do people get this test?

Brucellosis causes prolonged fever, joint pain, sweating, and fatigue — symptoms easily confused with other infections. Identifying Brucella antibodies confirms the diagnosis so the correct antibiotic combination (doxycycline + rifampicin) can be prescribed.

When you should consider this test

• When you have prolonged unexplained fever, joint pain, or night sweats — especially with animal exposure
• When you have consumed unpasteurised milk or cheese
• When working with livestock or in veterinary or slaughterhouse settings

How to prepare

No fasting needed. A blood sample is collected from a vein in your arm.
