What this test checks

Measures an enzyme found mainly in your liver and bones. High levels can mean a liver issue (especially blocked bile ducts), bone problems, or are sometimes normal in growing children and pregnancy.

Why do people get this test?

Part of standard liver function testing; also useful in evaluating bone pain or fractures.

When you should consider this test

• Yellow skin (jaundice) or itching
• Bone pain or frequent fractures
• Routine liver checkup

How to prepare

Fasting is preferred but not strictly required.
